The European Union has laid the foundation for e-invoicing in public procurement with Directive 2014/55/EU, in which the Peppol network (Pan-European Public Procurement On-Line) plays an important role. This network ensures a secure and standardized exchange of electronic documents between companies and governments.
Certain obligations for e-invoicing are also expected for SMEs in Belgium:
However, these obligations differ per country and may depend on the size of the SME. For Belgium, you can find a nice article about PEPPOl & e-invoicing through KROTON Accountancy. The government will assist you in your transfer from your usual PDF invoice, to the new e-invoicing that will be mandatory by 2026.
Besides the government and your accountant, also Weichie.com can assist in your transfer from regular invoicing to the new way of e-invoicing. Contact us for more info!
Peppol (Pan-European Public Procurement Online) is an electronic network designed to exchange digital documents such as invoices and purchase orders between organizations and governments in a secure and structured way. Here are the most important aspects SMEs need to know about Peppol:
Peppol is a network that uses standards and protocols that make it easier to exchange documents. Regardless of the software used by the companies (Interoperability), they can send electronic invoices to other companies and to the government. Rules can also be imposed automatically, such as making a purchase order number mandatory. If this is not present on an invoice, it will be returned immediately.
The Peppol network itself consists of Access Points. Only these access points can place and retrieve documents on the network. (send and receive). So as soon as you want to start sending out electronic invoices, or as soon as your company needs to receive electronic invoices, you will have to go through such an access point.
The Peppol network can do much more than just send out invoices. It is intended to allow you to share all types of secure documents with other companies and government agencies in a simple and fast way.
Weichie.com itself is not a Peppol Access Point, but it does have a permanent partner on which our Weichie.biz platform runs. The Weichie.biz platform is a kind of mailbox where our customers can easily consult the status of their invoices and send them via the Peppol Network.
Your company must be registered on the Peppol network. You can do this by registering with a service provider that offers an access point. Here we try to offer a simplified method with Weichie.com, which carries out all these registrations for you behind the scenes. For example, you can use the Weichie.biz platform to receive and send all your e-invoices, and we work behind the scenes with our PEPPOL partner to correctly register your company and send all your documents securely over the PEPPOL network .
As mentioned, the documents must be converted to a standardized format (UBL) that complies with the European standard. You can also easily do this via our BIZ platform, and again we take care of the conversion behind the scenes. This way you can keep an overview of all your electronic invoices in a clear and organized manner.
The first step is always the biggest. You are ‘mandatory’ to get rid of your current system that you have been using for years without any problems. Now they suddenly say that you should start sending e-invoices. A new, unknown term and after some research it turns out to be a bit more complicated than expected.
The purpose of electronic invoicing via PEPPOL is to ensure a more efficient operation for the exchange of important documents. This allows invoices to be processed faster, or if something is missing such as a PO number or a reference, the invoice is automatically returned with a message that something is still missing. This way you can be sure that the recipient actually receives your invoice when it was received and that everything on the invoice is correct to make a payment.
Both sender and recipient can also access all exchanged invoices via the PEPPOL network. This means you have lower follow-up costs because the processing of the invoices happens automatically.
There is also compliance according to European and national regulations, which means that all invoices are put in a standardized format.
We recommend that you seek guidance in a timely manner and register your company on the PEPPOL network. So that you don’t have to register for this in a hurry. With the right guidance, you can switch systems in no time.
More specifically for Belgium, e-invoicing will become mandatory for government contracts. The Belgian government requires that all suppliers send their invoices via Peppol.
As more and more European countries make electronic invoicing mandatory, Peppol is becoming the standard for secure and standardized document exchange. So the network will not only be used for invoices.
SMEs that already use Peppol and e-invoicing can work more efficiently and are better prepared for future legal requirements. We can only recommend that you prepare yourself for this before you suddenly receive your first electronic invoice and you suddenly have to connect your company to the Peppol network.
Electronic invoicing is currently only mandatory for invoices to and from the government, but it will soon also become the standard for all B2B invoices and documents exchanged between companies.
Work with a Peppol service provider who is familiar with Peppol and can help integrate the access point with existing systems. We are happy to respond to this at Weichie.com. We are not an access point ourselves, but we are happy to guide and onboard our customers in a simple way on the Peppol network.
Weichie.com can also advise on implementing e-invoicing in your current systems. So that you can continue to work in your existing way as much as possible and the switch to electronic invoices is actually self-evident.
Peppol is a safe system that helps companies work more efficiently and comply with new regulations, making it important for SMEs to respond to this in a timely manner. You don’t like to be surprised by a sudden change in your current way of working. So if you start this in time, you won’t have to drop everything when you receive your first electronic invoice.
SEO for small businesses is a BIG deal! You can make a significant impact with your small/local business. The main goal of a small business website is to provide helpful information and to gain more customers.
(more…)Eager to start with improving the online visibility of your website? Make sure your website is ready for it! Our own SEO services here at Weichie.com always start with a technical website scan of our client’s site. When we do this, we find a lot of mistakes that are made over and over again. So here’s a list of the most common technical SEO mistakes we find on our client’s websites. If you have a technical background, you can easily fix them yourself.
For online brands and businesses that are looking to get better growth from search marketing, going full throttle into SEO can be tempting but can lead to bad results if one isn’t careful. You will lose a lot of resources if your website is just not ready for it. Most of the time, the technical issues are quick fixes. With the new Google rank factor: Core Web Vitals, Google spends more attention than ever on technically correct websites.
Read our list below of the most common SEO mistakes and top mistakes in digital content production.

SEO is a powerful tool that is easy to implement, but even easier to implement wrong. A well-executed SEO strategy can significantly increase search traffic; however, a strong-implemented plan with common mistakes can cause a site’s rankings to plummet.
I don’t know a better place to start than the code behind your website. The technical issues on your website will mostly take place in this part. So you might need basic development skills to fix the mistakes here.
If you’re using a free or premium website theme, I can already tell you your code is not optimized. Purchased themes are bloated with functionalities to help a broad range of use-cases. But your website probably isn’t even using half of the functionalities that come with the theme. Therefore, your website loads in a lot of additional scripts and tags that reduce the loading time of your website – for no reason. You don’t need all of the fancy libraries in there.
You can also check if you’re using page builders or not. On WordPress, popular page-builders are Elementor, Divi, or WPBakery. While those builders might be a great help for you while editing the website, they are also loading in a lot of additional libraries to be able to do what you’re trying to make.
A simple example: Your free/premium theme comes with a setup to create your own image slider and gallery. However, you don’t need a slider or a gallery at all – so you’re not using it on your website. Your website will still load in all the scripts to display a slider.

What better way to track SEO mistakes than with the Google tools itself? The main metrics to check your SEO score are with Google tools. The most popular ones are Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and Google Tag Manager. But the number of websites we see with no analytics installed or worse: wrongly installed Google tags are imaginable.
These tools are free and give you in-depth insights into the traffic on your website and how visitors land on your site. Without those tools, you’re investing blindly in SEO. We don’t only use those Google tools for our SEO services, but they give us a pretty good insight during our kickoff analytics of your website.
They are free and super simple to install, so I recommend you to install at least the Google Analytics snippet and claim your domain in Google Search Console.
Anchors are links on a website and are used for internal & external link building. They are an important factor for SEO and Google gives them more attention than regular text. If you are using anchors on images, or use links that say “read more”, you’re missing out on opportunities. Your visitors may know where “read more” will link to, but using generic links like this is not great for Google.
Because anchor links get additional attention from Google, it’s better to say something like “Read more about red balloons” – Where ‘red balloon’ is the target keyword of the page you’re linking to.
Naked anchor texts are links where you don’t write any text inside the anchor. Here are you missing out on opportunities as well, as Google can’t use any anchor text at all. This type of link is most common when you’re placing images inside the anchors.
While it might not really hurt your SEO score, it will also not improve your keyword rankings by as much as it could while using strong anchor texts.
besides the anchor text, also the anchor link itself plays a big role. This is the actual page the link will redirect the user to. But it seems to us that not everyone knows the importance of those anchor links. Some use them simply as text-decoration, to highlight text in another color but are not linking to anything. Others are linking to page IDs instead of the actual page title.
For example, a link that links to website.com/everything-about-red-balloons has more weight for your SEO campaign than the same link but is written like website.com/?p=2764. This link will go on the same page, but Google prefers the first version, as the link URL actually contains the target keyword.
Those types of links are most common when people start using links as filters (/?q=564) instead of using the actual category name like (/?q=red) or when links are auto-generated with the wrong permalink structure.
We’re not finished talking about anchor links in SEO just yet! As Google crawls your website, it finds pages by also crawling all the URLs on a page. It helps Google understand the page structure of your website and which pages are more important than others. That’s why both the anchor text AND the anchor links discussed in the two previous points matter so much.
What Google also does not like, is when you do the above steps correctly, so you have a strong anchor text and anchor link, but the page it links to does not exist. You removed that page or the external website you’re linking to doesn’t exist anymore.
If you’re bringing Google to broken pages on your website, or from your website, your anchor link will have a negative impact on your SEO score instead of the positive one you’re going for.
I’ve spent three points of this article on anchor links, so please give those links on your website the attention they deserve! I don’t want to see any anchor-related SEO mistakes on your website anymore.

How often do you go to a website and see as page title “homepage” or simply the title of the website? This is a very lazy SEO mistake. When you navigate to another page, the title will never change. You’re on the ‘yourcompany’ website and that will be the title… for all of the pages!
I assume I don’t really need to explain why it’s not a good idea to do it like this. Title tags are a pretty heavy SEO measurement and having ‘homepage’ as a title is really a waste of a super easy opportunity to target your specific keyword.
This counts for the meta-titles, but please don’t make the same mistake with your meta-descriptions! Don’t leave them blank, because then they don’t show up on your website. If you don’t have the time to write anything, at least just put the page title there. (not recommended, but still better than nothing!)
Those meta-tags count!!
In the first instance, redirect management is only important when migrating to a new website. So if you already have a website and you’re revamping it with (or without) an agency, make sure there is proper redirect management. Backlinks are one of the biggest SEO ranking factors and are very hard to get. Make sure you don’t lose them because of a poor migration to your new website. These are huge SEO mistakes!
If your website is already up-and-running, redirect management still counts if you’re changing the URLs of certain pages or posts. You can change those slugs to target more specific or long-tail keywords, but when you change them, make sure the old slug redirects to the new one.
Make sure to scrape your site every now and then to make sure your internal linking structure is still working properly. When you change the URL of a page, double-check that there isn’t an internal link still directing to the old slug. Even with the redirect set up correctly, you’re losing your internal linking power when the link still contains the old slug.
There are a lot of possibilities to create mixed content. And mixed content is something that Google does not like… at all. The most popular ‘mixed content’ error is when your website is mixing secure with non-secure resources. You can force an HTTPS connection on your website, but the links, images, or fonts on your website are loaded in over HTTP. This is not good! Make sure everything link on your website is using HTTPS.
The second way of mixed content is of course actually mixed content in terms of language. Are you on an English website? Don’t use French copy on there! Every HTML page receives a lang-attribute to Google know what language this page is written in. Do you have the same content in another language? Then the hreflang-tag on that page will let Google know where to find the same page in a different language.
However, if you tell Google: This article is written in French and Google scans your page and discovers it’s not in French at all. You’re getting punished for having mixed content. So if you’re using a multilingual website, sit down and double-check your articles for mixed content.

SEO mistakes in multilingual websites are very, very common. Multilingual websites are very delicate but very easy to do wrong. While multilingual websites are very strong for SEO – as you’re targeting keywords in different languages, the chances of creating mixed content are very large.
It’s not only the text that’s changing. You also need to translate your page URL, category names, image names & alt tags, and all the links on your page. Linking from a French page to another article in English will bring your visitors (and Google while crawling) to the Dutch version of the website without them wanting to.
It’s also important to connect your pages with the correct hreflang tags. If you have an article in English and the same article in French, you can let Google know that isn’t the same article but in a different language using hreflangs. If you don’t do this correctly, Google will see your English article and your French article as 2 different articles. Which splits your page authority over your two pages.
A sitemap is a file on your server that lists all existing pages on your website. A Robots.txt file is another file on your server that lets crawlers know which pages and folders they are allowed to scrape.
There are free sitemap generators online that will generate a sitemap for you. But they don’t cluster your sitemap in different post-types. It’s simply a long list of pages. It’s better for Google to cluster your sitemap in different post types, so it’s easier to understand and maintain. In the image below you can see our sitemap is separated into a posts-sitemap, page-sitemap, work-sitemap, service-sitemap, … So Google knows all pages in post-sitemap are blog articles. All pages in service-sitemap are specific service pages.
Make sure your sitemap is always up to date when you add, edit or remove pages! When you have a good sitemap tool, it will probably update the sitemap automatically. But with those free sitemap generator tools, you need to upload a new sitemap after every update. Google will use this sitemap to crawl your website faster, but if it’s not up-to-date it will hurt your SEO rankings.
The Robots.txt file blocks access to specific content for crawlers. If you have sensitive content on your server, you can block crawlers to scan those folders. But as you can imagine, blocking the wrong resources (blocking your entire site for example) can do a lot of harm to your SEO score. This is the first file crawlers scan, to see where they can and can’t go on your server.
It’s recommended to put a link to your sitemap destination in your robots.txt file.

Now that you know the importance of the sitemap, it’s also important to understand that Google scrapes your website together with your sitemap. It uses your sitemap as a page-list, to see which pages are available on your website. Next, it scrapes your website and tries to understand the sitemap. Which pages are related, which page links to what other page – both internal as external links.
When you have a pagina listed in your Sitemap.xml file, but there is not a single link on your website that goes to that page, it’s called an orphaned page in your sitemap. When Google finds those, it marks those pages as unimportant.
The other way around is also not good! When you do link from your website to a single page on your site, and that page is NOT in your sitemap. Then Google thinks your sitemap is invalid and your site loses points on the technical aspect.
It’s easier to tell your clients to visit yoursite.com/contact then to tell them to go to page yoursite.com/?p=4873. This does not only count for your visitors, but also for Google. Try to keep your permalinks clean and short, but still use your target keywords in there.
Try to keep the URL structure of your website consistent throughout your entire website. When you start using clean URLs, don’t mix it up with paged query URLs like the following example: When you use slugs like this: /services/service-1 & /services/service-2 then make sure your other post-types use the same format. And don’t start doing this for your portfolio pages: /portfolio/?project=3943 but also make it a clean URL: /portfolio/project-title
Title tags are one of the most common tags on website pages and seem obvious. Still, too many customers have websites where they’re using it completely wrong. I will give you a few simple facts about page titles (the h1-tag):
With #3 I mean that you can’t use an h1 and an h3 tag on your web page, without using an h2. If you would like to use an H6 element on your webpage, you need to take into consideration that you need to use the H1, H2, H3, h4, and H5 title tags first, before you are allowed to use the H6 tag.
Otherwise, Google sees your page as less structured and you’re using title tags for styling purposes and not for content. Content-wise, titles and meta-tags are the most common SEO mistakes.
Over the years, web performance has started to play a bigger and bigger role in SEO. Definitely performance on mobile devices. Google wants to offer its customers the best online experiences, and slow-loading websites won’t give that to your visitors. So if your website performs poorly, Google will show other websites that perform better.
Google started its own AMP-project initiative to show content faster on mobile devices. This protocol is already retired but the other ranking factor right now that measures performance is the Core Web Vitals. However it shows that Google cares more and more about high-performing websites, together with good content.
Seamlessly picking in on the performance factor for SEO mistakes, images also play a big role! As performance is all about fast loading times and optimized code. Images are the easiest way to f**k things up. Beautiful photography plays an important role in modern web development. But uploading your images raw can be pretty heavy for loading. Try to upload your images in the most compressed way.
If you’re using thumbnail images, don’t use the image format that is 4k pixels wide. Use the correct image formats for all your images in the format they will be displayed on your website.
SEO is super simple to do, but even simpler to do it wrong. As we always come across the same technical SEO mistakes, we’ve created this list. This list will be updated over the years when we find more recurring mistakes, but this is the list with the most common technical mistakes.
Are you a developer? Please use this list to check on the technical part of your website. Not a developer but looking to improve your SEO? You can always request a free SEO quote and it will include a small technical analysis of your website. (Including a check on all the points listed in this article)
Grow your Shopify store with Google tools like Google Shop, Analytics, Tag manager, and the Search Console! While text-based articles still rank the highest in Google Search, you are still able to generate additional traffic by offering your products directly on Google as well.

Nowadays people search for everything on Google. It’s fast, easy, and perfect to browse around if you’re not sure what you want yet. Google Shopping is a service provided by Google (obviously). It allows customers to search, view, and compare products. The shopping list pops up if you’ve entered a search for products. But this will only list sponsored ads.
Clicking on the ”Shopping’ tab (like how you would search for images on Google) will give you a list of all products. This view can be filtered in Google itself, but clicking on a product will actually redirect you to the actual webshop. It’s a perfect way to generate more visibility for your products and brand!
You can list your products here as well for free! If you have your products in Shopify, the only thing you need is a Google Adwords and Google Merchant Center account – free to set up.

Once you’ve created your free account on Google Merchants Centre, you can enter all of your products in there manually. This can be a little time-consuming, definitely when you have a lot of products. An easier way to do this is by adding Google as an additional Sales Channel on your Shopify website. You can add a sales channel by installing the Google Channel app from the Shopify app store.
After installing the Google Channel app, you can navigate to the Google tab under Sales Channels in your Shopify store and look for the Product Listing tab. There are 3 product statuses: Approved, Pending, and Not Approved. In this tab, you can find a link in the top right corner saying ‘Manage availability’. Here you can select what products you would like to add to Google Shopping and the app will sync your Shopify products with the Google store automatically.

This is an example of the Google Shopping Sales channel. But the same method also works for eBay, Etsy, Pinterest, Zalando, … listings.
Why would you need Google Analytics on your Shopify store while Shopify has a built-in analytics tool? Well… the Shopify analytics themselves are very basic and are focused more on your products & conversion. What were the best-sellers, how many products of each type did you sell, average order value, abandoned checkouts, …
Adding Google Analytics will give you a better understanding of the user journey on your webshop. How did they found your store on Google? What pages did they visit and in what order? In short, Google analytics is more detailed and it’s easier to export data reports from there. Don’t forget to enable the enhanced e-commerce tracking in your Google Analytics dashboard to also view your store performances through Google Analytics.

Besides that Google Analytics is a very useful and actually must-have analytics tool on your website, you are also required to add the Analytics tracker on your website when you’re using different Google tools. For example, Google shopping or Google Tag Manager.
If you get the hang of Google Analytics I would also recommend looking into Conversion Goals and Google Analytics custom events. This will supercharge the insights on your store even more and you can really start optimizing your store for conversions and your marketing funnels.
The benefit of using the Google tools is that you can use the same account for all different software tools. Google Tag Manager is another useful tool from Google that you should add to your website. The Tag manager will probably be used by your marketing team but you can quickly set up the basics yourself for tracking custom events like the amount a product manual got downloaded for example.
If you only have a few things you want to track you can add the snippets manually in your Shopify theme files. But when your store grows or is already full-grown you will need an advanced external tag management system. This makes it easier to add more tracking events and saves you a lot of trouble when you want to update and maintain your current trackers. This is exactly what Google Tag Manager is.
The idea behind Tag Manager is that you have one central code snippet in your theme files and all the other tags like your Facebook pixel, Pinterest shop or analytics custom events can now be managed through your Google Tag Manager dashboard. It helps you to manage all your tracking snippets in a clear user interface, so you don’t need to dive into your Shopify theme code all the time when making changes.
eCommerce and advertising is a match made in heaven. The online store business is very competitive and chances are very high your competitors are advertising their products online. The main goal here is the same for everyone: whenever you spend money on advertising, you want the viewer of your ads to perform a certain action. The only way you see if you’re spending your marketing budget effectively is to track the user while he’s seeing your ad, and when he/she is browsing your website after clicking on your ad.
To do this you need some sort of tracking system in place before you start running ads on any platform (for Facebook ads you need Facebook Pixel, for Pinterest you need the Pinterest Pixel/Tag helper). For Google, this would be Google Analytics or the Google Adwords remarketing tag. Make sure to link your Google Ads account with your Analytics account by going to your Google analytics > Property Settings > product linking > Google Ads Linking.

When your Ads account and Analytics account are linked, you can select your goals or transactions from Google Analytics straight to a specific marketing campaign. Making it easier for you to optimize your campaigns for those marketing goals.
The Google tools are very helpfull and free to use. Unless you have any other tools you want to use, Weichie will install Google Analytics on every project we do by default, to make sure you won’t lose any data from the moment your website/webshop is launched. We also required the Google Analytics tools for our SEO Services.

What to look for, what questions to ask and how can you be sure that you have made the right choice? An important thing to know in your search for a good SEO company is knowing what SEO is. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization and is self-explanatory: It optimizes your website for search engines.
When you Google something, how often do you reach the bottom of the page? And will you click on page 2 or just try a different search instead? The first 3 results in Google catch 90% of all search traffic. Websites ranking out of the top 10 (page 2 or further down) are losing huge amounts of traffic. Those search result pages are often referred to as SERPs. (Search Engine Result Pages). An important term you can remember when diving deeper into SEO optimization.
This is where SEO comes in. It optimizes your website for those search engines, pushing your website up in those rankings. The most classic version is your website title and a short introduction that will show up. But in the modern days we live in, there are a lot of new tools to make your website rank among the top results. Ever heard of position zero in Google?
Position Zero makes your website rank above the first search results, without advertising!! There are different types of layouts for those things, but the most popular ones are cards (see image below) or question lists. (see also at the bottom of the next image). Those are eye-catchers for visitors and will give your website a higher chance of receiving organic traffic.

Now that you know the basics of SEO and what it can do for your business, you’re ready to start your search for the best SEO company out there. Let’s dive in!
As a business, you are rarely the only provider of a particular service or product. Even if you have the best product on the market. If you’re not on Google, you don’t exist. SEO companies can help you with this!
We are a Brussels & New York-based SEO agency that provides more than simple SEO strategies or content updates. But that’s not what this post is about, you can find more info about that on our SEO Service Page.
This post will give you more background information about how you can find the best SEO company that fits your needs. It can be us, but most importantly, this article will give you more insights into how SEO works and which are critical points on your website.
Deciding to invest in SEO Marketing is a big decision that will potentially improve your website and save time, but it can also damage your site and reputation. Make sure to research the potential advantages as well as the damage that an irresponsible SEO can do to your site.
Copywriting and keyword research are the loudest players for an SEO company. But a great SEO company will provide much more than that! We can offer useful services like:
The benefit of SEO marketing, compared to advertising (SEA), is that advertising won’t have any effect on your site’s presence in the search results. Google never accepts money to include or rank sites in their search results.
The main reason for a website is that it can help people. You’re either offering services that are interesting for your visitors or explaining something, teaching something, or just amusing them.
When you post something on social media or upload a video to YouTube, chances are your main goal is to get as much interaction as possible. Did you create a funny video? Of course, you want people to see it! The same goes for your website. When you offer the most comfy chairs in town, you need to make sure everyone knows that!
SEO is made to help people find what they need. When someone Googles for a comfy chair, they are probably looking for a comfy chair. If your chair is not popping up in the results, you’re missing out! (and your competitors are winning)
It’s important to know how people are looking/searching for the products or services that you offer. The power of SEO is offering the correct content for the users who are searching for it. Someone searching in French probably wants to see French results.
The other way around, popping up in the search results for services you do not offer will make visitors bounce from your website. These are bad SEO points!

Your business will be hard to find without a website. Does it need to be a professional one? Depends. A strong website has the potential to become the digital motor of your company and will be in many cases the first thing people see about your company.
Do you need a professional website for SEO? Not really, but having a slow website that’s not working fluently on mobile won’t give you good SEO rankings. If you would hire a professional SEO company, probably the first step they take is simply to improve your website. We offer SEO Kickstarters that will do just that. Bump your current website to the modern standards that SEO and search engines love.
You can do as much keyword research and competitor analyses as you want. I would say that for most things, you need a solid base to start from. SEO is a slow but steady process that is easy to track. But you simply can’t dive into it right away. Want to rank higher on Google? Take a deep breath and have a second look at your current website.
Search engines have a different approach to your website than actual visitors. They want to offer the best user experience to their users, so if you have a slow or heavy website, SEO will be harder.
You can spend double the amount on a marketing or SEO agency that is harder to maintain in the long run. Starting with a solid base will ease the whole process AND improve your overall website at the same time! Win-Win!!
People are lazy! Do you want to find ‘the best restaurant’ or ‘the best restaurant nearby’?? How often did you Google for something with those keywords in it? close by, nearby, in New York, in my area, … The result will be higher than you think. Another SEO trick you might not know, but search engines will automatically push items that are close to your location.
Googling “Best SEO agency” will give you different results in New York than when you Google the same thing in Brussels. Simply to the fact that Google knows you are not looking for a company in Brussels when you’re in New York. (But we are both in New York and Brussels though…)
Local SEO is a very important aspect of your SEO game plan. People are doing nothing else than looking at their phones. With the rise of digital assistants like Siri, Alexa, and Google Assistant, … They are all focused on location for people who search for things while they’re on the go.
Simple tricks for local SEO are using local landing pages, where you can focus on your services for that particular area. Don’t just use location, people in those areas might use other keywords or have different interests. Use a correct address, and contact details like email phone, and opening hours, … Google Maps and Google My Business are also great SEO tools for your company! But more on that later in this article.
Nonetheless… Please make sure you have a working mobile website when you’re going for local SEO!

Enterprise SEO adds an entirely new level of complexity to SEO that can be overwhelming. The competition in those areas is mind-blowing. Does your company require SEO on those levels? Look for an SEO company that is passionate and lives for those challenges! (hint hint)
Most of the time enterprise SEO competes for the most expensive keywords there are. Those keywords are both high in search volume, and high in value. Examples are purchase-intent keywords and all internet giants are eager to get those. Think of Amazon, Bol.com, Wikipedia, … When you’re up against them you need a dedicated SEO team and strategy.
SEO companies will follow up on the status of your website and will change their strategy accordingly. They follow up on impact vs. effort and work fluently together with the marketing team.
The SEO company you choose must be a perfect match for your business. Being on the same page is very important, with fast & clear communication, specific needs or goals, and a clear Request For Proposal (RFP) to make sure you’re 100% sure before you team up with an SEO Partner.
A multilingual website… It sounds like a normal thing to do, yet I keep seeing many many mistakes on multilingual websites. In New York, this is something rare. But here in Brussels, almost every website we make needs to be multilingual. Most companies think it’s simply translating the content from Dutch to French or English. But believe me, by doing that, you’ll do more harm than good (for SEO purposes).
As said in the beginning, a solid base will ease up the SEO adventure of your company significantly. Translations belong in this setting. it’s not just the content that needs to be translated.
Make sure to translate:
Re-reading this post, SEO looks like a checklist for a good website. Improving your SEO will improve your website and vice versa. A decent SEO company will make sure the translations on your website are done the right way.
A golden tip: Don’t auto-redirect users to a translated version of your website based on their browser language! It looks tempting and a good service for your visitors, but this makes it harder for Google to index all different languages. (definitely when not all your content is available in all languages)
Search engines are smart. If you have a page in English and in Dutch, Google will present the correct language version of your page that you think is best for the user. Depending on keyword, location, and probably other parameters as well.
Another golden tip: Don’t use subdomains for your translations! You are hurting your SEO by redirecting users to another subdomain. It divides your visitors over multiple domains. Also, external backlinks to your website need to choose which domain they’re linking to. If 3 French sites are linking to your French page and 5 other sites link to your main domain, having the French site set up as a directory will boost the backlink count of your main website by 8! Another successful SEO tip.
Google My Business is a great off-page SEO technique. It’s also a must-have! Even if you not even want to do SEO. If you don’t have it set up yet for your business, make a Google My Business profile right now! You can continue this article later.

When people search for your company name directly in Google, they’ll see a business card of your business on the right-hand side of the search results. It provides essential business information on the spot. Name, address, contact details, opening hours, and customer reviews, … I strongly encourage you to claim your Google business profile ASAP.
Claiming your company on Google My Business will automatically mark your business on Google Maps. Another great win and off-page SEO technique. When your business is on Google Maps, your business gets recommended in the search when people close to your business location are looking for your services. You don’t even have to do anything about this.
Other important SEO tools are Apple Maps and even Waze My Business. For the same reasons as Google Maps. People use those apps a lot to search as well!

We’re finally here. The most important question, and probably the reason why you are reading this post. How do you find the best SEO company for your business? Before you can decide if a company is good or bad in SEO, you first need a basic understanding of what SEO is and how it works. That’s why I provided basic SEO aspects in the 6 topics above.
Even if you don’t have the time yourself and just think of finding an SEO company to do it, please spend a little bit of time on SEO research. Otherwise, the SEO company you partner with can easily quote expensive prices for what you’re getting in return. Now that you know the basics of SEO, you can start negotiating and comparing different SEO companies.
SEO is a long and slow but steady process. Besides the technical aspects, you need to make sure you see yourself working together with this company for the long run. You need to have a great match with your SEO company and need flawless communication and planning.
Before going into the meeting room, make sure you have a clear goal. This way the SEO company needs to come up with a draft SEO game plan to see if it matches your needs and workflow.
Important questions here to ask are how the SEO campaign will be set up, how will they present the results to you, what SEO techniques will they use? (off-page, on-page, link building, …), how long will the campaign run, how intense will the follow-up be, and of course what will be the price tag?
Also important to know is what will happen if you decide to stop the SEO partnership. Unlike marketing campaigns, SEO campaigns take time to set up, but once they’re published they’re also slow to take down. Unless they undo everything they did…

A lot of people choose either SEO or SEA (Search Engine Advertising) or Social Media Advertising. SEA is the perfect choice if you’re launching short-term landing pages and what to reach as many people as possible, in a short period.
Going for the long run, I would think twice and give the benefit of the doubt to an SEO approach first. Ok with Google Ads you have instant results but once the campaign is over, your website loses all progress. It never ranked first in Google, you simply paid for the first spot. You can invest as many millions in SEO as you want, a Google ad will always be displayed above the organic search results.
However, both SEO and SEA require in-depth keyword research and competitor analysis. A lot of this research phase can be used for both the SEA campaigns as well as the SEO game plan. This slightly bigger investment mostly returns the biggest ROI! (return on investment)
For short-term projects, however, there is no point in doing SEO. Because by the time Google picked up your page, the event was probably long gone.
When you invest in SEO, you’re also investing in your website at the same time. Because SEO challenges the technical aspects of your website like loading time and image optimizations. Make sure the SEO company you choose is not only about marketing and content writing. (as much content as possible) but also has great in-house developers.
Be committed to implementing the recommended changes. SEO takes time and effort. If you’re not going to take the time to make these changes, it’s not worthwhile hiring an SEO professional.
Interview your potential SEO company. Can they share previous work or success stories with you? Do they follow the Google Webmaster Guidelines? How long are they in business, what are the most important SEO techniques, and are they genuinely interested in your business? (Decent customer & competitor research)
Ask for a technical and search audit. Don’t start hiring right away. Ask for a decent strategy and website audit up-front. The SEO company needs to know what they are doing and what they can do best to help rank your website. Every agency has its strategy. Hire someone whose strategy aligns the most with your business goals.
Decide if you want to hire.

SEO for eCommerce is one of the most competitive industries I can think about. Not only are you competing against giants like Amazon, Zalando, or Bol.com, but eCommerce keywords are also the most expensive ones. People who search on those keywords already have an intent to purchase something, making it super important to ‘win’ those customers.
(more…)I’ve seen way too many articles writing wrong info about why you should not pick WordPress just to be able to sell their platform instead. WordPress is the most popular CMS in the world and it has its reasons for that. Let me try to give you some honest insights!
If you are someone looking for a new site but have no experience with websites, be careful with what you read online. Definitely when you’re reading articles WordPress vs Squarespace on a Squarespace website. Or some Webflow designer or agency bashing on WordPress too. They will always favor their platform over WordPress.
I am not here to talk bad about other platforms, or to talk good about WordPress either. But those comparison websites are wrong in so many ways I couldn’t help myself with writing this article. A few years ago when I was working for another company, my boss told me that “All WordPress websites look the same”.
From that moment on I knew he didn’t know what he was talking about and I left the company and started my own Weichie.com agency! Specializing specifically in WordPress & Shopify.

I will sum up some of the most common comparisons that I’ve found online. I’m not saying WordPress is better, I’m just here to explain how WordPress works. A lot of those platforms compare ‘bad WordPress things’ that have actually nothing to do with WordPress at all.
In this article there will be references to all kinds of CMS platforms, just to make sure I am not specifically targeting one platform. To be as transparent as possible.
Every WordPress installation is different. Nope. Every WordPress install is the same, with the same core database tables. What makes it different is the theme you’re using (multipurpose themes, including e-commerce, plugin usage, …) All those extras are installed on top of WordPress and will add extra tables to your database or change the folder structure.
Technical: WordPress comes with a WordPress CLI, making it possible to install a new WordPress website on your domain in under 5 minutes. Want to use multiple environments such as local development/staging and live? Set up a GIT repo and pull your updates between those branches.
Many of those platforms claim they’re using the best hosting on the market with 99% uptime, backups, and security. Don’t forget that you’re paying a monthly fee for that!
You can buy your favorite domain name for 99 cents a year and add a hosting package for $0.49/month. Will it be good, secure, and fast? No of course not. Is this because you’re using WordPress? Also negative!
Having good hosting is very important for your website, whether you’re using WordPress, Drupal or something else. Having a host is more than just a place to put your website on. It provides you with company mailboxes, subsites, DNS management, cloud storage, backups, security, modern technology, …
Technical: Good hosting is kind of the base of your website performance. Serve your website over the new HTTP2 instead of the regular HTTP for example. Serve your site as a compressed gzip file, have automated cloud backups to save you some bandwidth, create secured folders on your host, and have multiple databases for your services, … A host is something you want and needs full control of.
TIP: don’t add plugins to your website if it can be done straight from your host.
Updates in WordPress can break your site. True, but the same goes for Drupal, CraftCMS or any other platform. That’s why site maintenance is not free. if you have a Squarespace or Sitemanager account, you pay a monthly subscription fee to keep your site online. This fee also includes your site maintenance. The problem with WordPress is that you have full access to your website’s core. This means you can go ahead and start clicking the ‘update’ button without knowing what you’re doing.
Technical: The WordPress CLI I’ve mentioned earlier will make those updates easier and faster than ever.
Many of those comparison websites wish you good luck with finding answers to your problems if you’re using WordPress. If you pick their platform, support is just one call away and they offer you dedicated solutions. You still have to figure out things to do on your own, and when you get stuck you can reach out for help.
Having a digital agency making your website, you just tell them what you want to have and they’ll deliver. See something on your WordPress site that’s not working correctly? Call your agency. Most of the time those services are included in their maintenance solutions.
But ‘bad support’ has nothing to do with WordPress. It depends on your agency or on the paid service you’re using.
Is this a good thing or a bad thing? You tell me. WordPress has a plugin for everything, making integrations with other platforms easier and you can add functionalities to your website without knowing how to code. Would I recommend this? No. The more plugins you add, the more maintenance you’ll need. But this means that you can do way more with WordPress than a Wix site.
WordPress has over 50.000 plugins you can add. Not all plugins will work for your WordPress install and break your website or will even make it vulnerable. But some of them are helpful and easy to implement.
If you’re looking to use integration with a service you like, there may likely be a plugin for that on WordPress. While there won’t be one on another platform.
TIP: Simply confirm with your digital agency before adding plugins on your own.
Except for all the plugins you can add, WordPress is available as a REST API. Meaning you can use WordPress as a headless CMS. For those who’re not familiar with what a REST API is, it serves all the content of your website as a string. This option is the master of flexibility. Want to create mobile apps, but want to keep using WordPress as a content manager? You’re all good to go. Having your content served through a REST API is a functionality that is lacking in all self-hosted website platforms. (except from Shopify) Want to use GraphQL instead of REST? There’s a plugin for that 😉
Maybe you don’t need to integrate everything you want, but this also means you can inject items from your own site, into your own site! In Squarespace for example I know it is not possible to automatically pull your latest 3 posts from combined post types from anywhere on your website.
Another example where most of my clients struggle is the integration of payment gateways for donations or straight-up one-time payments and subscriptions. I’ve used SplashPayments, Mollie, Payrix, iRaiser and Stripe with WordPress websites. Because every client has their own, already in use, payment gateway. It’s a huge loss of time if you can’t integrate your preferred services into your website.
Performance is another big issue that those comparison sites love. If I use a free theme on WordPress it won’t be performant. Correct. Even using a premium theme won’t be performant, because those themes are designed to serve a wide range of customers. It’s loaded with features you won’t use. It will have 3 different slider integrations just to make sure there is one you like. So you select the one you like, but the other 2 sliders are still loading as well.
However, those other sites aren’t much better. Try running a site audit on Wix or Squarespace. You’ll see they don’t get past 25% performance as well. The performance of your site depends on a lot of things, not just your CMS. You can purchase a clean WordPress theme and still be uploading 7MB images or 36MB gif files in your sliders. Making your website load slow again.
This is where an agency jumps in. We’ll make sure if you upload images, those will be automatically optimized and compressed. Served in the new webp format instead of png or jpg to increase compression. Lazy load your images, and auto-generate thumbnails so if you load a 2000px wide image, you’re displaying a correctly cropped 300px wide thumbnail on your website. Enabling cache, making your host GZIP your site, bundling HTTP requests for HTTP2, minifying and combining stylesheets and javascript, …
Slow websites are definitely not your CMS’s fault. But having to freedom to enable all the things I’ve just summed up, is the freedom you have with WordPress.
Will your website be integrated with your CRM systems and are you planning on using Marketing automation tools? Go with a platform you have full ownership of. Most services also already have an integrated solution for WordPress, simply because this is the most widely used website platform.
The benefit of having your own hosting is that you can do it however you please. For one of my clients we run both their website and their CRM system on the same host. For someone else we run a website and a start-up platform on the same site. Someone else is running membership portals on their website, linking multiple domain names to a single host.
Add marketing automation software like Autopilot or Infusionsoft by Keap, through your own domain. All the services you’re using, simply on your own website.
Just to clarify this has actually nothing to do with WordPress again. Those are options you can’t do with self-hosted solutions such as Shopify, Sitemanager, and Wix, … But are possible with platforms such as WordPress, Drupal or CraftCMS.
If you’re using platforms like Wix, Squarespace, Site manager, Weebly, Yola, … They own your website. If you’re in a later stage and want to switch platforms, good luck with that. You’re stuck on your current platform. Those sites won’t allow you to export your website. If you’re lucky, you can export the content of your blogs or pages, but exporting your theme or other functionalities? No way.
If you’re looking for a decent website, you’ll need to go for platforms that are hosted on your server. Giving you complete freedom. Examples of those platforms are ModX, CraftCMS, Drupal and of course WordPress too. Want to swap from Drupal to WordPress? Your developer will have his work, but it’s possible.
Same for your domain name. If you register a domain name, make sure it is registered under your name and company! If a platform sells you a website together with a domain name, I hope for you the domain is honestly yours and you can do whatever you want with it.
All the ‘bad’ things people say about WordPress have nothing to do with WordPress. The biggest mistake is that WordPress is free to use. So you can get started with a â¬2/month host, download a free theme, add plugins for everything you need and there you go: The worst website in history and blaming it on WordPress. Claiming other platforms are better, but forgetting you’re paying a monthly fee for that and you don’t have 100% ownership.
I hope this article gave you honest information about picking your next website platform. Maybe a subscription platform such as Squarespace or Sitemanager is perfect for your business. Those platforms offer you the option to get started on your own without having a ‘development agency’ helping you out. Having problems? Create a support ticket with your provider and they’ll help you out.
Do you need more custom functionalities and will your website grow together with your business? Reach out to a digital agency. They will listen to your needs and advise you on the best platform for you. Both performance-wise as price-wise.
Are you someone who also feels that all WordPress sites look the same? Or do you think you can do anything you want with a Wix site? Check out these beautiful websites built on WordPress. Let me know if you could tell 😉

Websites are a passion for a digital agency. We kept a list of all rememberable ecommerce websites we came across the past month to keep in mind.

Homepage design mockup by Dibas Sarkar on Dribble. Bummer it is just concept design and not a live store. I would love to see it in action or animated, but the mockup is fancy enough to join my inspiration list.

The website itself is not always clear to me, but my focus here is on the animations. The page transitions are smooth and fast and the single pages have scrolling interactions as well, like parallax and moving text. The Category section with the hovering images is also a nice plus.

A very classy store from a very classy man. I didn’t expect anything less from the artist and musician Stromae. Fancy hero slider and smooth responses to user interactions.

Sold for the animated homepage-hero and the way the navigation transforms to a sticky-nav on scroll. The shop has an original way to navigate through the product collections and the single-product page is exceptionally minimal.

A beautiful Adidas sneaker collection website. Smooth page distorted transitions when navigating through the different types of shoes. The website doesn’t have much content, so the overall web animation really lift the project for me.

On this website it’s the homepage again that makes me fall in love with it. The home-slider on scroll is super smooth and the transition effect is just brilliant. If you navigate through the website and scroll on the product pages, all animations are just spot-on!

Simple, clean, beautiful. Not a lot of content, but subtle animations on page navigation and even on cursor-location. This project also has an interesting choice for shopping cart icons and

A well done digital experience! From loading screen to page-scroll and image sliders. Very, very fancy. Maybe a little overwhelming at some points, but still performant.

Impressive homepage. Impressive catalog menu. Impressive single product page. Impressive performance. A brilliant webshop design.

My all time favourite webshop. Original homepage effect and beautiful product shots. Performance on point, but the loading screen can be a little annoying on slow internet connections. Anyway, I really love the simplicity of the website and the amazingly clean and minimal animations. A winner for me!
Looking back at this collection of beautiful webshops, I do believe front-end development is a different kind of art. The possibilities that we can do with headless storefronts and animation libraries like GSAP and threejs are promising for all future ecommerce stores.
Make sure to have a look at our own ecommerce projects!
Short answer: Yes! What else did you expect from a web developer… The long answer: YES!! Still not convinced that a new website is the right decision for your brand? This post will give you more insights on whether or not you should make the investment.
